Ex-Newcastle Star Mike Williamson Named New South Shields Manager
Ex-Newcastle Star Williamson Takes Over at South Shields

Former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson is back in management after being confirmed as the new manager of South Shields. The 42-year-old, who made over 150 appearances for the Magpies during a near six-year stay, returns to the dugout for the first time since leaving Carlisle United last March.

Williamson's Journey Back to Management

Williamson had been part of the setup at Mariners Park since January, initially serving as first-team coach under former Newcastle player Matty Pattison. He later stepped into a newly created role as director of performance and culture towards the end of the season. Now, he takes the helm as head coach, succeeding Ian Watson, who departed for League One newcomers Rochdale last week.

His managerial career includes guiding Gateshead to the National League North title in 2022, and South Shields will hope he can achieve similar success. The club narrowly missed out on the title last month, falling to a 2-0 defeat against Kidderminster Harriers in the play-off final.

A New Chapter Under New Ownership

Williamson takes charge just weeks after a deal with an international investment group triggered a change in the club's ownership structure. Club chairman Geoff Thompson expressed confidence in Williamson, stating: "Mike has quickly become a valued and influential figure within the football club. His leadership qualities, knowledge of the game, and understanding of what we are trying to achieve made him the obvious candidate for the role. We are excited to see him lead the team into this new chapter and wish him every success."

Williamson will now work to add to his coaching staff and bolster the playing squad ahead of the new season.

Pre-Season Friendly Announced

South Shields have confirmed they will face National League newcomers Harrogate Town in a pre-season friendly at Mariners Park on Tuesday, July 21, with a 7.30pm kick-off.
