A BBC consumer expert has shared tips on how households can save a fortune on energy bills, with potential savings exceeding £1,500 through straightforward changes.
Heat Pump Dryers Deliver Substantial Savings
Consumer specialist Harry Kind explained on BBC Morning Live that opting for energy-efficient appliances can dramatically reduce bills. He clarified that claims of a ban on conventional tumble dryers have been exaggerated, but new minimum energy performance standards expected from 2027 will phase out inefficient models.
The most significant savings come from choosing the right appliance. Mr Kind highlighted that switching to a heat pump tumble dryer could revolutionise household expenses:
- Heat pump dryer: approximately 33p per cycle
- Condenser dryer: approximately 83p per cycle
This represents a saving of 50p each time you dry laundry. Used three times weekly, that accumulates to £78 saved annually and £1,560 over a typical 20-year lifespan.
Mr Kind said: "If you buy the right tumble dryer, you can save a fortune." Despite higher initial costs for heat pump dryers, prices have dropped significantly, with some models available for under £250.
Eco Settings Do Save Money
The expert addressed a common misconception that eco modes consume more energy due to longer running times. In fact, eco settings operate on a "lower and slower" principle: lower temperatures, reduced water consumption, and extended cycle durations.
He compared it to fuel-efficient driving: "If you drive at 50mph instead of 70mph, it takes longer, but it's cheaper because you use less fuel."
Washing Machine Savings
Eco settings on washing machines typically reduce energy usage by 30-40%, translating to annual savings of between £18 and £48. This is because approximately 90% of a washing machine's energy consumption stems from heating water, which eco cycles minimise.
Dishwasher Savings
Research by consumer group Which? revealed that operating a dishwasher on standard cycles costs roughly £71 annually, compared to £52.13 on the eco setting, delivering nearly £20 in yearly savings.
Additional Tips to Cut Appliance Costs
Mr Kind offered practical strategies to further trim household bills:
- Dry garments outside whenever feasible – it costs nothing
- Do not overload machines (target 80% capacity)
- Regularly clean lint filters for optimal performance and safety
- Take advantage of lower off-peak electricity rates where available
- Cut down on unnecessary washing to prolong clothes' lifespan
He also cautioned that drying clothing indoors without proper ventilation can release 1–3 litres of moisture into the air, which may lead to dampness and increase heating bills.
