Darwin Nunez is reportedly planning a shock return to Liverpool this summer, despite interest from Chelsea and Barcelona. The Uruguayan striker left Anfield last year for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia but has struggled to make an impact.
Nunez's Liverpool Spell
Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for £64 million but only spent three seasons at the club. He scored 40 goals in 143 appearances, with his best Premier League tally being 15 goals in his first season. However, he failed to replicate his Benfica form, where he scored 34 goals in his final campaign.
Al-Hilal Struggles
In Saudi Arabia, Nunez managed just six goals in 19 games before being dropped from the squad due to foreign player limits after Al-Hilal signed Karim Benzema. Reports suggest he is considering terminating his contract to secure a European move.
Interest from Chelsea and Barcelona
Barcelona see Nunez as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, while Chelsea are monitoring him under incoming manager Xabi Alonso. Nunez could compete with Joao Pedro or replace him if he leaves. Newcastle United are also linked.
Liverpool's Stance
Liverpool's position on re-signing Nunez is unclear, especially after spending over £200 million on strikers Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike last summer. New manager Andoni Iraola is keen to strengthen the squad, but the club may not need another forward.
Nunez's desire to return to Liverpool stems from his affection for the club, but a Premier League move elsewhere remains possible.
