Daily Habits and Smart Meters Help Cut Energy Bills by £320

Daily routines and smart meters are helping Brits save hundreds of pounds on energy bills, according to a new survey of 2,000 adults. The research found that 76% of people need consistent routines to stay on track, and 90% agree that a routine is vital for managing their budget effectively.

Savings from Consistent Money Management

Three-quarters of those with consistent money management habits—such as regularly checking bank balances and setting aside money on payday—have saved an average of £320 over the past 12 months as a result. Daily tasks like meal preparation (45%), household cleaning (44%), and exercise are part of achieving these goals.

Smart Meters Drive Energy Awareness

To help track spending, many turn to practical tools including budgeting apps and smart meters. Among households with a smart meter, 65% report it has helped them track energy usage and costs, while 47% claim it encouraged habits that reduce energy consumption.

Sarah Fitzgerald, a mother of two from Essex, shared her experience: "My routines are what help me stay in control of it all. I like to know what's coming in and going out each month, so having simple ways to stay on top of my budget is important to me." She added that checking her smart meter display has become a regular part of her routine, helping her family develop better habits: "My kids are more aware of the energy they use now, and those small changes can make a real difference to our bills."

The Power of Daily Habits

The survey, carried out by OnePoll, showed that habits have a positive impact on goals. The power of daily habits appears true for 70% of respondents, who get quiet satisfaction from the small routines and rituals shaping their daily lives.

Gladiators star, Olympian and TV personality Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, also known as Nitro, emphasized consistency: "I've always believed that success comes from doing the simple things consistently. Life can get pretty hectic, so routines help me stay focused and moving in the right direction. It's the same with managing things like energy use at home – with a smart meter you can keep track of your usage and feel more in control of it. For me, it's another example of how small daily habits and having the right information can make life feel more manageable."
