The Washington Wizards have emerged victorious in the NBA draft lottery, earning the coveted No. 1 overall pick for the first time since they selected John Wall in 2010. The team, which finished with the worst record in the league this season at 17-65, had a 14% chance of securing the top spot, tied with the Brooklyn Nets and Indiana Pacers for the best odds.
Lottery Results and Top Prospects
The Utah Jazz claimed the No. 2 pick, followed by the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 3 and the Chicago Bulls at No. 4. The Los Angeles Clippers secured the fifth pick via a trade with the Pacers, with the remainder of the lottery order including Brooklyn (No. 6), Sacramento (No. 7), Atlanta (No. 8), Dallas (No. 9), Milwaukee (No. 10), Golden State (No. 11), Oklahoma City (No. 12), Miami (No. 13), and Charlotte (No. 14).
Four college freshmen are considered front-runners for the No. 1 selection: BYU's AJ Dybantsa, who led the nation in scoring with 25.5 points per game; Duke's Cameron Boozer, the AP Player of the Year averaging 22.5 points and 10.1 rebounds; Kansas' Darryn Peterson, who averaged 20.2 points in 24 games; and North Carolina's Caleb Wilson, who posted 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds on 58% shooting. All four attended the lottery announcement at Chicago's Navy Pier.
Historical Context and Future Changes
This marks the eighth and likely final year of the current lottery format, which gives the worst teams a 14% chance of winning. A new framework, designed to further discourage tanking, is expected to be ratified by the NBA Board of Governors in the coming weeks. Starting next season, the three worst teams would have a 5.4% chance of winning the lottery, while the next seven teams would each have an 8.1% chance. The lottery would also expand from 14 to 16 teams.
The Wizards' three consecutive losing seasons—the worst in franchise history—finally paid off, as they now have the opportunity to add an immediate impact player. The team previously made trades to acquire Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and the No. 1 pick could further bolster their roster. The NBA draft is scheduled for June 23 in New York.
