Millions of Brits are choosing to holiday close to home this year, with more than 25 million adults forgoing foreign trips in 2026. Many are opting for staycations to avoid airport stress, travel disruption, and worries over fuel shortages.
Survey Reveals Shift in Holiday Plans
A survey of 2,000 Brits revealed that almost half (48 percent) have no plans to travel abroad in 2026. The cost of living was cited by 33 percent as the most common reason. Others wish to explore Great Britain, support the local economy, and avoid the risk of getting stranded overseas.
Over a third (34 percent) said concerns over fuel shortages have impacted their holiday plans. Despite this, 22 percent are content with not booking an overseas trip, with 19 percent saying it is not worthwhile in the current climate.
Top Staycation Destinations
Instead, 46 percent believe there are plenty of fantastic destinations on their doorstep. The Lake District, Devon, and Cornwall rank among the most sought-after spots for a getaway in the coming months.
Research commissioned by National Rail found that 36 percent of staycationers plan to travel by train. Picturesque views, the chance to enjoy activities like reading, and the feeling that the holiday starts when the journey begins are key reasons for choosing rail travel.
Rail Travel on the Rise
Rail industry data showed a 10 percent increase in ticket sales between April and mid-May for summer travel to Britain's most popular coastal destinations. Sarah Apps for National Rail said: "We are seeing a real shift in how people think about their summer holidays this year, with more looking to discover how rewarding a Great British break can be."
She added: "From breathtaking coastlines to vibrant cities and peaceful countryside, there is an incredible variety of destinations easily accessible by train. It is great to see so many embracing the chance to discover places that feel a world away without travelling too far from home."
Connecting with Loved Ones
The research also found that 35 percent see staycations as a better way to connect with friends and family, compared to just 9 percent for holidays abroad. A third believe staycations are ideal for creating nostalgic memories, while 22 percent say nothing beats a classic British summer.
Sarah Apps concluded: "Staycations can feel like a real home away from home, giving people more time to connect with those who matter most. Whether discovering somewhere new or rediscovering an old favourite, it is about making the most of the experience from start to finish. Travelling by train means your holiday can begin the moment you step on board, giving you time back to spend exactly as you choose."
