Social Security Delay Due to Calendar Quirk, Not Benefit Cuts
Social Security Delay Due to Calendar Quirk, Not Cuts

Millions of Social Security beneficiaries were shocked this month to discover that their monthly benefit checks would arrive much later than expected. Thankfully, the delay is not the result of benefit cuts or policy changes. According to the Social Security Administration's benefit schedule, it is merely a quirk of the calendar that often catches people off guard if they are not prepared.

The administration sends out benefits on a staggered schedule, with checks typically arriving on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on the beneficiary's birth date. This year, the second Wednesday in May does not come around until the 13th day of the month—later than any other month this year except January and December.

'This is the kind of thing that sounds small in Washington, DC, but feels huge at the kitchen table,' said Ted Jenkins, managing partner at Exit Wealth. 'If you're living check-to-check, an extra five days can feel like five weeks.'

If you are a beneficiary feeling anxious about your check this month, it is important to remember that no payments are being skipped or reduced—it is strictly a calendar delay. Americans who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) receive their Social Security payment on the third day of the month and their SSI payment on the first day of the month.

'The system hasn't missed a payment in its entire 90-year history,' said Max Richtman, CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare. The delay is not the result of benefit cuts or policy changes—it is due to a quirk of the calendar.

For seniors who get by on a fixed income, small shifts in timing like this can have an outsized impact on budgets. The Social Security Administration dispatches retirement, survivor, and disability benefits payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on a recipient's birth date.

Payment Schedule by Birth Date

  • Second Wednesday of the month: Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th
  • Third Wednesday of the month: Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday of the month: Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st

Due to the calendar, payments in April were issued a bit earlier than usual, making the gap between checks noticeably longer than some beneficiaries might be used to. For seniors who get by on a fixed income, small shifts in timing like this can have an outsized impact on budgets, paying for essentials and prescription planning.

'A delayed Social Security payment calendar is a reminder that every retiree needs a little breathing room in their checking account because life doesn't care what day the government sends the deposit,' said Jenkins.
