George Russell remains confident he can overhaul Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli to win the Formula One world championship, despite a 43-point deficit after five races. The British driver suffered his latest setback at the Canadian Grand Prix, where a battery failure forced him to retire while battling for the lead with Antonelli, who went on to win.
Russell, 26, acknowledged the gap is significant but insisted the pressure is off. “Right now it’s his to lose,” he said. “He is so many points ahead. It feels like the gods don’t want me to be in this fight. But you know, the pressure’s off. Go out, enjoy every single race. Try to win every single race. I’ve got nothing to lose.”
The season has been frustrating for Russell, who won the opening race in Australia but has since been hampered by technical problems and misfortune. In China, two qualifying issues cost him as Antonelli took pole and the win. In Japan, a poorly timed safety car benefited the Italian, while Russell could only manage fourth. Antonelli also triumphed in Miami, where Russell struggled on a track that does not suit him.
Canada was meant to be a reset for Russell, having taken pole and won there last year. He secured pole for the sprint and the grand prix, but Antonelli was never far behind, finishing just six-hundredths off in qualifying. The pair exchanged the lead multiple times in the race, running side by side and even touching wheels, before Russell’s car shut down on lap 30.
Russell’s frustration was evident as he stood trackside, but he remains determined. “It is, of course, frustrating, but I want to be in that fight. Hopefully, the luck will turn,” he said. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Russell’s resilience, noting it is one of his great character traits. With 17 races remaining, Russell will need to draw on that resilience to close the gap on his 19-year-old teammate, who has proven a fierce and resolute competitor.
