Coronation Street fans were left horrified this week after Roy Cropper increased the price of a pie, chips and mushy peas at Roy's Rolls by more than 25%, from £5.50 to £6.95. The price hike was spotted on the café's new specials board following its reopening after a fire earlier this year.
Reacting on social media, one viewer wrote on X: "Roy Cropper has officially joined the 1%. £1.45 price hike just because he put in some new lightbulbs. Capitalism has reached the cobbles." Another said: "I know inflation is bad, but Roy's Rolls is now charging London prices for mushy peas. Absolute scenes!"
The café, owned and operated by Roy (David Neilson) for almost 30 years, was closed for repairs after a fire ripped through the premises. Roy was saved from the blaze and managed to salvage mementos from his wedding to the late Hayley Cropper. When it reopened, the interior remained unchanged, but the new pricing drew criticism.
In contrast, fans were surprised to discover that the Viaduct Bistro sells cocktails at bargain prices. A mojito costs £5.50, an apple thyme martini £5.75, and a Viaduct Vista (rum, pineapple juice, coconut cream) also £5.75. One fan joked: "Makes me nostalgic for a time when going out was reasonable and affordable—back in the 90s!"
