Britons are being urged to inspect their spare change for four rare coins that could be worth a combined total of nearly £140,000. An expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard on TikTok, who has over 260,000 followers, highlighted the valuable finds in a recent video.
The first coin to look for is the 1933 penny, of which only six or seven were produced by the Royal Mint. Featuring King George V on the obverse and Britannia with a trident on the reverse, this coin can fetch over £100,000, with estimates up to £130,000.
Next is a 1983 2p coin that bears the inscription 'new pence' instead of 'two pence'. This error occurred during a design transition, making it worth around £1,000 to £1,500. The third coin is a 2012 London Olympics 50p featuring a swimmer, but the valuable version has water lines covering the swimmer's face. Only a small number were circulated before the design was altered, pushing its value to about £2,000.
Finally, a gold-proof version of the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin is worth approximately £6,000. One recently sold at the Royal Mint's online auction for £6,800. The expert advises checking all change carefully, as these coins could be hiding in plain sight.
