Lionsgate's 'Michael' continues to reign supreme at the global box office, earning $26.1 million in its fourth weekend for a worldwide total of $703.9 million. The film, produced by Graham King, is now closing in on the $910 million haul of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', King's previous Oscar-winning biopic. Domestically, 'Michael' has grossed $282.7 million, surpassing the final domestic total of 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2' ($281.7 million) and pacing 7% ahead of 'Oppenheimer' through the same period.
In second place, 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' from 20th Century Studios earned $18 million in its third weekend, a 57% drop from the previous frame, bringing its domestic total to $175.8 million. The sequel is losing ground to new competition, particularly the horror romance 'Obsession', which opened in third place with a strong $16.1 million, well above pre-release expectations of $8-9 million.
'Obsession', directed by YouTuber Curry Barker and released by Focus Features and Blumhouse, received an A- CinemaScore, the highest of any wide release this weekend. The film drew 59% men and 41% women, with 39% of ticket buyers under 25 and another 39% aged 25-34. Premium large format screens accounted for a quarter of its sales. The top-grossing location was AMC Burbank in California with $71,300.
Other notable entries include 'Mortal Kombat II' with $13.4 million in its second weekend (down 65%), 'Sheep Detectives' with $9.32 million, and 'Super Mario Galaxy' with $4.45 million, which is approaching $1 billion globally. The overall weekend box office was estimated at $106.1 million, just 1% off from the same period last year, providing a boost to the summer season.
