Paul McCartney frequently journeys down memory lane on his latest solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane. As he himself mused, "I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past. But then I think, how can you write about anything else?" Indeed, one of the greatest living songwriters embraces nostalgia on his 20th solo effort. Inspired by his childhood in postwar Liverpool and his early days with Beatles bandmates Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and George Harrison, this album is a lovely addition to an astonishing career. It stands as one of his most insightful records.
Compared to 2020's McCartney III, which showcased technical showmanship, this album focuses less on virtuosity and more on rejuvenated songwriting. Producer Andrew Watt, aged 35, whose recent credits include The Rolling Stones, Elton John, and the late Ozzy Osbourne, helps McCartney craft deeply personal tracks. The opening song, "As You Lie There," captures a schoolboy crush with mesmerizing intensity. It is a heady slice of psychedelic rock reminiscent of Sgt. Pepper's, complete with reverb-soaked guitars, silky drum beats, and McCartney's distorted yowls. Unlike the misguided 2018 single "Fuh You," this track is a brilliant, even sexy, salvo from an octogenarian.
The album offers plenty of variation. "Mountain Top" is a trippy ode to McCartney's love of the Glastonbury Festival, while "Ripples in a Pond" is a romantic pop song dedicated to his wife, Nancy Shevell. Beatles fans will delight in "Down South," a jaunty rock number about hitchhiking adventures with the late George Harrison. The blues-soaked "Lost Horizon" evokes memories through unassuming sounds like laughter from a children's playground or clock chimes. Even the cheesy "Home to Us," a duet with Ringo Starr, feels like a fun, pub piano singalong, reminiscent of early Beatles songs. Throughout, there is a playfulness that suggests McCartney has remembered why he started making music.
After his 2022 Glastonbury headliner, where his voice cracked, some wondered if retirement loomed. Yet his triumphant 2024 tour and this album prove he remains as electrifying as in his twenties. The Boys of Dungeon Lane is a charming testament to McCartney's remarkable staying power.
