How Martin Lewis Became a Millennial Icon and National Treasure
Martin Lewis: From Money Expert to Millennial Oracle

Martin Lewis, often hailed as the most trusted man in Britain and the real shadow chancellor, is set to receive BAFTA's television special award at the annual ceremony. This honour, reserved for outstanding contributions to television, has previously been awarded to icons like Sir Bruce Forsyth and Delia Smith. But how did a personal finance expert become a certified oracle for the millennial generation?

From BBC Producer to Money Saving Expert

Lewis began his career as a broadcaster after studying law and government at the London School of Economics and earning an MA in broadcast journalism from Cardiff University. He worked on the BBC's business team, covering personal finance, before becoming business editor for Radio 4's Today programme. In 1999, he left the BBC to join Simply Money, where he coined the title Money Saving Expert.

In 2003, Lewis launched MoneySavingExpert.com from his living room with just £80. The site quickly became the UK's largest consumer website, attracting over 16 million monthly visitors. Its weekly tips email, despite the rise of TikTok, still has over 14 million subscribers, featuring chaotic subject lines like this week's: "6 Council Tax cost-cutters, FREE £210 ends, 'free' US flight trick, cheapest energy fix, Jet fuel cancellation protection?, Car Wars: industry fights back!"

The £87 Million Sale and TV Stardom

Lewis sold MoneySavingExpert to MoneySuperMarket Group for £87 million in 2012, staying on as editor-in-chief out of passion. That same year, he launched The Martin Lewis Money Show, which switched to a live format in 2020. On live TV, Lewis excels at dissecting unsexy topics like power of attorney and wills at breakneck speed, leaving viewers compelled to call their parents.

For millennials who received no financial education in school, Lewis is a saviour who helps them navigate student overdrafts and student loan repayments. He has campaigned on issues like PPI, unfair bank charges, and energy bills, becoming a cultural force. Even if you don't follow his advice directly, your friends likely do—discussing switching banks or maximising credit card rewards.

Unmatched Influence and Irreplaceability

Since joining Good Morning Britain as a regular host in March 2023, Lewis has proven formidable in interviews, impossible to bullshit due to his expertise. His cultural cache is evident in SNL UK, where he is a running gag, called "the greatest man alive today." A recent episode of The Rest is Entertainment revealed that if Lewis is unavailable, producers consider broadcasting from his hospital bed—proving his irreplaceable status.
