Enzo Maresca has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, with the Italian poised to take over at the Etihad Stadium after Guardiola's departure at the end of the season. The 46-year-old former Chelsea manager, who previously led City's Elite Development Squad and served as Guardiola's assistant, has been without a club since leaving Stamford Bridge in January. During his tenure at Chelsea, Maresca guided the club to Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup glory.
Double Chelsea Transfer Raid
Maresca is expected to target former players to strengthen his new squad, with Chelsea potentially offloading key assets if they fail to secure European football. Enzo Fernandez, the Argentina international who joined Chelsea for a British record £107 million in January 2023, could be reunited with Maresca. The midfielder has six years remaining on his contract, making a deal expensive but feasible. Fernandez previously admitted that Maresca's departure affected the dressing room, and a reunion at City would fill the void left by Bernardo Silva's impending exit.
Another Chelsea target is Levi Colwill, a 23-year-old defender who could replace John Stones. Colwill recently returned from an ACL injury and has a strong bond with Maresca, having praised him on social media: "Not just a top manager but a top person. Thank you for everything." Maresca's ability to get the best from the centre-back makes him a like-for-like replacement for Stones.
Elliot Anderson Marquee Signing
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has been heavily linked with City, and Maresca could make him the first major signing of his tenure. The 23-year-old England international, valued at around £100 million after Forest secured Premier League survival, could slot into Bernardo Silva's role or deputise for Rodri. Manchester United are also interested, but Maresca can lay down a marker by securing Anderson's signature.
Reviving Phil Foden
Phil Foden has struggled to replicate his 2023/24 form, and Maresca will be tasked with restoring the 25-year-old to his best. Foden, who signed a new four-year contract this month, was Premier League Player of the Season two years ago. Maresca's success with Cole Palmer at Chelsea suggests he can help Foden rediscover his peak performance, ensuring City maintain their dominance under Guardiola's successor.
