Manchester United's victory over Liverpool this weekend could end up costing the club millions of pounds. The Red Devils will be aiming for a win against their bitter rivals to secure their Champions League qualification bid, but it may prove financially costly.
Contract Clauses Trigger Wage Hikes
United are almost guaranteed a place in next season's Champions League, and a result against Liverpool would cement a top-five finish by defeating the reigning Premier League champions. However, a clause inserted into the contracts of United's top earners would force them to hand over substantial sums upon returning to Europe's elite competition.
The Times have reported that a 25% uplift will be applied to certain United players' wages from their level this season should they seal Champions League qualification after enduring years without a place among the European elite.
Financial Impact on Key Players
It's partly why United are prepared to allow Casemiro to depart, given his huge £350,000-per-week basic salary would have to be paid in full next season. While INEOS and Co. might be recouping some funds by approving Casemiro's departure, the United squad are set to be affected by a salary increase. Bruno Fernandes' salary at Manchester United could also be about to increase.
In some respects, it's proved a beneficial arrangement for United, as it's enabled them to reduce the wage bill during campaigns where they've failed to qualify for the Champions League, or European competition entirely.
Additional Revenue Streams
What's more, United's agreement with kit manufacturer Adidas features a £10m sanction for every season United aren't competing in the Champions League. The positive news for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS is that Champions League participation generates substantial revenue. It's estimated to be worth approximately £80m to £100m, meaning United could be able to absorb the wage rises and pursue targets in the transfer market without excessive difficulty.
