Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven as a potential summer target should Spurs suffer relegation from the Premier League. The Dutch centre-back, 25, has been linked with a move to Anfield amid Tottenham's precarious position in the drop zone, two points adrift of safety.
Van de Ven, who holds the record as the fastest player in Premier League history with a top speed of 37.38 km/h, is valued at £100 million by Spurs. However, a relegation clause could see that price drop significantly, making him an attractive option for Liverpool's injury-hit defence.
Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has endorsed the move, citing Van de Ven's pace as a key asset. "We know in football how important pace is going forward... I think Micky van de Ven is one of the quickest, if not the quickest, in the Premier League. So, yeah, he'd certainly be one who's on the radar," Hamann said.
Ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood also believes the transfer makes sense. "Micky van de Ven is the obvious choice for Liverpool this summer in that left centre-back position," he stated.
However, doubts remain over Van de Ven's footballing intelligence. Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders questioned his decision-making, saying, "Being a top defender is all about your brain... I am just not sure if Van de Ven's football brain is that good." Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has also expressed reservations.
Van de Ven, who joined Spurs for £43 million in 2023, has a contract until 2029. He has scored seven goals this season, one more than Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, and boasts an 89% passing accuracy. The left-footed defender previously admitted Liverpool were a "nice club" in 2023, hinting at his interest.
