The future of Paramount+'s Western drama Lawmen: Bass Reeves remains uncertain, with creators hinting at a potential anthology format for any second season. The series, which recently landed on Netflix and entered the UK Top 10, has not yet been renewed.
Created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, the eight-episode first season aired in 2023. It stars David Oyelowo as Bass Reeves, a real-life African American deputy U.S. marshal who captured thousands of criminals without injury.
In April 2024, Feehan stated that if renewed, the show would become an anthology focusing on different historical lawmen. Director Damian Marcano echoed this, noting that a second season might not feature Reeves. However, Oyelowo expressed openness to returning, saying at SXSW 2025: 'To saddle up again is something I'm open to... The more people ask for more, the sooner it'll happen.'
Initially billed as a spin-off of 1883, the series was later confirmed to exist outside the Yellowstone universe. Fans have praised the show on IMDb, calling it 'one of the best Western series of our time.'
