However, in April 2024, Feehan revealed that if the series gets the green light, it would transform into an anthology, shifting focus to historical lawmen other than Bass Reeves. Director Damian Marcano echoed this sentiment, expressing his desire for renewal while noting the anthology format. He stated, "I would love for it to be [renewed]… I thoroughly fell in love with the subject matter, and with our filming location." Marcano also warned that a potential second season may not feature Reeves, as the series aims to cover multiple characters.
David Oyelowo's Return
David Oyelowo, who portrayed Bass Reeves, has expressed openness to reprising his role. At the 2025 SXSW festival, he said, "To saddle up again is something I'm open to, so you never know. The more people ask for more Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the sooner it'll happen, I think. I loved, loved, loved playing that role."

Initially described as a spin-off of the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, it was later confirmed that Lawmen: Bass Reeves no longer takes place in the Yellowstone universe.
