Land Rover drivers are among those hit hardest by surging diesel prices, with nearly £60 of a typical 70-litre fill-up now going to fuel duty and VAT, according to analysis by Land Rover Monthly magazine. Data from PetrolPrices.co.uk shows diesel has risen 36.5% in nine weeks, from 140.72p per litre on February 9, 2026, to 192.14p on April 13, 2026. Petrol climbed 20.3% over the same period, from 131.46p to 158.17p per litre.
The price spike is attributed to escalating Middle East tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. For Land Rover owners, a 70-litre diesel tank at April's peak cost approximately £134.50, compared to £98.50 in February – an increase of £36. Fuel duty at 52.95p per litre and 20% VAT mean that tax accounts for roughly £59.50 of that fill-up.
Land Rover Monthly publisher Steve Miller said: 'Fuel prices have become one of the biggest shared frustrations in the Land Rover community. When almost £60 of tax can be built into a single 70-litre diesel fill-up, ministers need to recognise the pressure on rural drivers, working vehicles and classic 4x4 enthusiasts.'
Despite the stereotype of gas guzzlers, many older Land Rovers are now low-mileage classics. Insurance data analysed by the magazine shows pre-1990 models average just 1,425 miles annually, while 1990-2000 models average 3,188 miles. By contrast, 2000-2016 Defenders average 7,263 miles – close to the national car average of 7,100 miles.
Classic Land Rovers also retain significant value: Series I models range from £4,000 to £115,000 (average £22,389), while Defenders up to 2016 span £2,500 to £180,000.
