Kobbie Mainoo is set to sign a new five-year contract with Manchester United, capping a remarkable turnaround in his fortunes at Old Trafford. The club is expected to announce the midfielder's new deal later this week, providing a significant boost ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool.
Resurgence Under Carrick
The Mancunian has become a pivotal figure under head coach Michael Carrick after being marginalised by former boss Ruben Amorim. Mainoo had been considering a loan move when Amorim was in charge, but he has since formed a fine partnership with Casemiro in midfield. Under Carrick, Mainoo has started 12 Premier League games, with United collecting 29 points from those matches, all but securing Champions League qualification for next season.
Contract Details
Mainoo currently has just over a year left on his existing deal. The new contract, which could keep him at the club until 2031, is set to include a significant pay rise. The England international, who made his debut in 2023, has amassed 98 appearances for United, scoring seven goals.
Turnaround in Fortunes
Last summer, Mainoo wanted to go out on loan, with Napoli expressing interest. He could have sought a January move until Amorim was sacked. The Portuguese coach had perhaps signalled his own impending departure when he described Mainoo as the "future" of United in December. Mainoo's new contract aids United's forward planning, as they are likely to require at least two midfielders in the summer, with Casemiro set to leave at the end of the season.
Mainoo follows Harry Maguire in signing a new deal as United's plans for next season continue to take shape. The announcement is expected to be made later this week, giving fans a reason to be optimistic ahead of the crucial encounter with Liverpool.
