Keely Hodgkinson has hinted that she may attempt to break Jarmila Kratochvilova's 42-year-old 800m world record at the London Diamond League meeting in July. The Olympic champion said she would decide closer to the time whether to go after the Czech athlete's time of 1min 53.28sec, the oldest standing track and field world record.
Hodgkinson joked that the event could become a 'battle of the world records', with Josh Kerr aiming for a world mile record and Armand Duplantis also competing. 'I would love to have that happen on home soil,' she said. 'It might be a battle of the world records and who can get about one.'
The 24-year-old confirmed she is in prime shape after breaking the world indoor record in February and winning the world indoor championships in March. 'So far, the preparation has gone very, very well,' she said. 'I've been healthy for a year now. I've not missed a training session, so I'm in a really, really good place.'
Hodgkinson starts her outdoor season next week with a 400m in Rome before her first 800m in Stockholm on 7 June. She also revealed long-term ambitions to run sub-50 seconds for 400m, sub-2 minutes for 800m, and sub-4 minutes for 1500m.
