DWP Alert: 9 Million Pensioners Get Winter Fuel Payments From Today
DWP warns millions over Winter Fuel Payment text scams

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an urgent nationwide alert, warning millions of state pensioners to be on high alert for fraudulent text messages as a major payment scheme begins.

Vital Support Arrives for Pensioners

Starting from Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the DWP has begun automatically distributing the Winter Fuel Payment to around nine million pensioners across England and Wales. This vital financial support, worth up to £300, is designed to help those of State Pension age with their energy costs during the colder winter months.

In an official announcement on the social media platform X, the DWP confirmed the rollout, stating: "Nine million pensioners are to benefit from vital support for energy costs during the colder months as Winter Fuel Payments start hitting bank accounts from today." The department confirmed that all payments will be made directly into bank accounts between now and the end of December 2025.

Serious Warning Over Text Message Scams

Alongside the payment news, the DWP has raised the alarm over a predictable surge in scam attempts. Criminals are exploiting the payment schedule by sending out fake text messages that invite recipients to apply for the payment.

The DWP's clear and critical advice is: "If you receive a text message inviting you to apply for a payment, do not engage with it and do not click on links." Engaging with these messages could grant scammers access to your bank account, leading to potential theft of your funds.

Instead, the public is urged to forward any suspicious text messages to the free number 7726, a service run by telecoms regulators that helps combat malicious communications.

Payment Eligibility and Key Details

For most eligible households, the payment is made automatically. The amount you receive depends on your age and circumstances during the qualifying week.

  • If you or your partner have reached State Pension age, you may be eligible for £200 towards your household bills.
  • If you or your partner are over 80, you could qualify for £300.

It is important to note that if your taxable income exceeds £35,000, your Winter Fuel Payment will be reclaimed through the tax system. The DWP emphasises that no genuine message will ask you to apply for this payment or request your bank details, as the process is automatic for those who qualify.
