Plans to lift the ban on drinking alcohol in football stands have been scrapped after a police warning, according to reports.
Andy Burnham had suggested the ban was discriminatory toward football fans, noting that rugby supporters can drink pints while watching a league game at Hill Dickinson Stadium, the home of his beloved Everton.
Police and Whitehall warnings
However, as per Sky News, claims have been made that clubs would demand additional policing if the ban were lifted for football matches. Whitehall also advised that policing games could become unaffordable when relying on general taxation.
Plans scrapped
As a result of the heavy financial burden, it is now reported that plans to lift the ban have been scrapped altogether.
