Scotland's two largest cities have been identified as major pickpocket hotspots in a new study by Ripe Valuables Insurance. Edinburgh ranks first among UK cities outside London for pickpocketing, with the Royal Mile singled out as a particular area of concern. Glasgow placed fifth on the list, with Buchanan Street noted as a common location for theft.
The research, released on July 29, analysed thousands of Tripadvisor reviews mentioning the word 'pickpocket' across tourist attractions nationwide. London dominated the national rankings, but Edinburgh's Royal Mile—a historic thoroughfare lined with over 70 shops catering to tourists—was highlighted as Scotland's pickpocket capital. The Daily Record previously described the Royal Mile as the country's 'worst tourist trap'.
Glasgow's Buchanan Street, one of the busiest shopping destinations in Scotland, was also flagged as a hotspot. Other locations in the top five outside London include Market Street in Manchester (second), and The Lanes and Brighton Palace Pier in Brighton (third and fourth respectively).
Alan Thomas, CEO of Ripe Valuables Insurance, said the research aims to help travellers stay safe while enjoying UK attractions. He advised holidaymakers to use anti-theft bags, avoid flashing expensive items, and not keep all valuables in one place.
