Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes has set a new Premier League assists record, but the Portuguese midfielder could surpass his own milestone next season with the help of teammate Kobbie Mainoo.
Historic Achievement
Fernandes made history on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign against Brighton, claiming a record-breaking 21st league assist. His corner was headed home by Patrick Dorgu in the 33rd minute, giving Michael Carrick's side the lead. The goal sparked celebrations as Fernandes surpassed the previous record of 20 assists shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The 31-year-old's milestone capped an incredible individual campaign, earning him the Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year awards, while also securing Champions League qualification for United.
The Mainoo Factor
Fernandes' best form came when sharing the field with young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo missed most of the season under former manager Ruben Amorim but flourished under interim boss Carrick from January. With Mainoo on the pitch, Fernandes recorded 17 assists, including 12 in 16 games when Mainoo started.
In contrast, Fernandes managed only four assists when Mainoo was absent, highlighting their effective partnership. Mainoo, previously misused as a No.10 by Amorim, is expected to play a deeper role under Carrick, allowing Fernandes to thrive.
Future Potential
Should the duo start all 38 league games together next season, Fernandes is projected to exceed even 21 assists. While about half of his assists came from corners, the synergy between the two midfielders is undeniable.
With Carrick's permanent appointment, Mainoo's regular involvement will be crucial for Fernandes to shatter his own record. The 21-year-old's resurgence has given United a formidable midfield partnership that could dominate the Premier League.
