A 14-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty in the River Thames has been named as Baltazar L'Quy. His body was recovered near Donnington Bridge in Oxford on Wednesday evening, making him the 11th person to die in a water-related tragedy during the recent heatwave.
Thames Valley Police described the death as unexplained but not suspicious. Officers were called to the scene at around 5.30pm. The boy's family have been informed and are being supported.
The Oxford Timorese Community Association confirmed the teenager's name and expressed their deepest condolences. A representative said the death has been a heartbreaking and shocking moment for the Timorese community in Oxford and across the UK.
Speaking to the BBC, the community member relayed a message from L'Quy's mother, who urged other parents to remind their children not to go into water unsupervised and to always ensure they are accompanied by an adult.
The tragedy follows a series of fatal water-related incidents involving young people across the country, including in Lincoln, Halifax, Rotherham, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Farnborough and Lancashire, as well as older victims in Cornwall and Wales.
