Britain's Best Motorway Service Stations Revealed: Gloucester Tops List
Best UK Motorway Service Stations: Gloucester Tops Poll

Motorists have voted for their favourite service stations across Britain, with a new survey revealing the top spots for food, cleanliness, and facilities. Researchers asked drivers to rank everything from food options and hygienic toilets to parking, atmosphere, and EV charging points.

Top Service Stations in Britain

The days of greasy spoon cafes and dirty toilets are a thing of the past at Britain's best service stations, according to a survey of 2,000 drivers commissioned by Isuzu UK. Gloucester Services (20%), located on the M5 and family-owned in partnership with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, cruised into first place. Far from an average roadside stop, it serves high-quality food freshly prepared in its kitchens and boasts a farm shop with produce from 130 local suppliers within 30 miles.

Second place went to the M6's Tebay Services (17%), owned by a Cumbrian farming family and known for championing local farmers through its farm shop and kitchen. Beaconsfield Services (11%) on the M40 also made the cut, praised for its lakeside terrace and preserved woodlands. West Yorkshire's Wetherby Services (11%) ranked highly, offering a dog walking area, EV superhub, showers, and washing machines.

Other top entries include Rugby Services (11%) on the M6 in Warwickshire, Cobham Services (11%) on the M25 in Surrey, and Stafford North Services (8%). The survey highlighted the importance of decent motorway stops, with motorists visiting an average of 25 service stations per year, and over a third (38%) planning journeys around where they can stop.

Notable Mentions and EV Charging

The research also rated Leeds Skelton Lake Services (7%) on the M1, Oxford Services (7%) on the M40, Fleet Services (7%) in Hampshire, South Mimms Services (7%) in Hertfordshire, and Membury Services (6%) on the M4. A surprising entry was Heston Services (6%) on the M4 in west London, once the butt of jokes but now praised for revamped facilities and cleaner toilets.

EV drivers (23%) spend the longest at service stations, averaging 34 minutes while waiting to charge, though 5% complained about insufficient charging points. In contrast, 21% said charging facilities are plentiful. Almost half (49%) of respondents admitted they have walked out of a service station that failed to meet expectations.

George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, said: “It’s clear there are some great quality service stations across Britain. At Isuzu UK we know drivers work hard everywhere from motorways to muddy fields.”
