Attenborough's Quiet Life in Posh Richmond Town

Sir David Attenborough, who has just celebrated his 100th birthday, has captivated millions by bringing the wonders of the natural world into our living rooms. With over seven decades of film-making under his belt, Attenborough's unmistakable voice has become inseparable from the story of nature itself.

A Quiet Life in an Affluent Suburb

His award-winning natural history programmes, including Life on Earth, The Private Life of Plants, Planet Earth, and The Blue Planet, have enthralled audiences across the globe. Having had more than 40 animal and plant species — as well as a constellation — named in his honour, he has ventured into uncharted territories and encountered some of the most remote communities on the planet.

Yet despite travelling to virtually every corner of the earth, the beloved wildlife broadcaster considers his suburban home in Richmond his most cherished spot, describing it as his "favourite place on earth" in his feature-length film, Oceans.

Richmond: A Picturesque Haven

Born in Isleworth, Middlesex, David spent his formative years on the campus of the University of Leicester, where his father served as headmaster. Today, however, he calls the affluent and picturesque Richmond his home. Nestled alongside the magnificent River Thames, the area is also home to the world-renowned Kew Gardens. The sweeping Richmond Park is a much-loved green space, where impressive herds of deer roam freely.

The delightful neighbourhood boasts an array of upmarket cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and coffee shops, making it one of London's most desirable addresses.

Property Prices in Richmond

While Richmond is undeniably picturesque, its properties don't come cheap. According to Rightmove, homes in the area fetched an average price of £967,297 over the past year. Flats accounted for the majority of sales in Richmond during that period, going for an average of £572,718. Terraced properties commanded significantly higher prices, averaging £1,096,037, while semi-detached homes reached £1,422,540.

A Modest Life Despite Fame

Despite being thrust into the spotlight, the celebrated veteran leads a modest life in one of London's most charming suburbs, where he spends much of his time following his revelation that he is approaching "the end" of his life. Sir David has continued to live in his family home in Richmond, London, ever since his beloved wife Jane passed away 29 years ago. Throwing himself into his work became a healing outlet during his period of grief. Having been married for 47 years to Jane Elizabeth Ebsworth Oriel, the couple have two children together, Robert and Susan.

Throughout his decades of documentary-making, Sir David has consistently shone a light on the environmental challenges confronting our planet, while also playing a key role in developing initiatives designed to safeguard endangered species.
