Arsenal have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez after Barcelona admitted that a deal for the Atletico Madrid striker is 'impossible' unless the Spanish club drastically reduces their £90 million asking price. The 26-year-old Argentine has been a long-term target for Barcelona, who view him as the ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski, but the Catalan giants have now shifted their focus elsewhere.
Alvarez's Impressive Form
Since joining Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 for £82 million, Alvarez has been in scintillating form, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists in 106 appearances. He played a key role in knocking Barcelona out of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League this season, although Atletico ended the campaign without a trophy. His performances have made him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
Barcelona's Change of Plans
According to Catalan outlet Sport, Barcelona have now turned their attention to Chelsea forward Joao Pedro as a more affordable alternative. The La Liga champions, who have won five trophies in the past two seasons, are keen to add a striker who can help them end their long wait for European glory. However, Alvarez's hefty price tag has forced them to reconsider, handing Arsenal a clear path to sign the player.
Paris Saint-Germain have also entered the race for Alvarez, which is less positive news for the Gunners. Despite signing three new forwards last summer, Arsenal are looking to revamp their attack once again. Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus are all expected to be made available for transfer when the window opens, even as the club pushes for both the Premier League title and their first Champions League crown.
Alvarez's Future Uncertain
Alvarez scored a penalty against Arsenal when the two sides met in the Champions League semi-finals earlier this season. In March, he refused to confirm his future at Atletico, stating, "Maybe yes, maybe no, you never know. I'm very happy here. It's a question that keeps coming up, but I'm happy." He added, "I'm focused on the day-to-day, working to improve and give my all. I never said anything bad about the club. I'm very grateful."
Alvarez has been sidelined with an injury since the Arsenal tie but could return for Atletico's final La Liga match against Villarreal on Sunday. After that, he will join the Argentina squad for the World Cup, where he will aim to defend the title.
With Barcelona out of the picture, Arsenal now have a clearer chance to sign Alvarez, though they will still face competition from PSG. The Gunners will need to decide whether to meet Atletico's £90 million valuation or negotiate a lower fee.
