Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has endorsed the club's pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to reports. United are preparing a formal offer for the 21-year-old, who is valued at £80 million by the relegated Championship side.
Mateus Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer for £38 million plus £4 million in add-ons. His performances have attracted interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, but United have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race, as the Gunners are reluctant to meet the asking price.
Bruno Fernandes, a Portugal teammate of Mateus, has spoken highly of the midfielder, who previously looked up to him during their time at Sporting CP. 'He is someone I looked up to and tried to learn from,' Mateus said in March.
Real Madrid, now managed by Jose Mourinho, are also working on a deal, while PSG have held talks over a double deal involving Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville. United hope to secure the signing as they rebuild under new management.
