Thousands of Bulgarian citizens flooded the streets of Sofia on Wednesday, voicing strong opposition to significant tax increases proposed in the country's draft 2026 budget. The demonstration occurred just before the budget's final parliamentary vote.
Major Demonstration Against Austerity
The protest, organised by the opposition coalition We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria, saw an estimated 20,000 people gather in the capital. This public outcry comes at a pivotal moment for the Balkan nation, which is preparing to join the eurozone at the start of next year.
Demonstrators expressed deep concern over the budget's potential to strain both individuals and businesses. Key grievances included the planned rise in social security contributions and the controversial doubling of the dividend tax.
Confrontation and Police Intervention
The protest escalated as participants formed a human chain around the parliament building and attempted to block the vehicles of deputies. This led to police intervention to prevent violence.
According to police reports, some demonstrators threw bottles and firecrackers at officers. Three police officers were injured during the clashes.
Budget Set for Approval Despite Widespread Opposition
Despite the visible public discontent and warnings from economists about the draft budget's significant risks, it is expected to pass. The ruling coalition government holds a comfortable majority in parliament, making approval likely.
The contentious budget sets a new record for government spending, amounting to nearly 46% of GDP. This substantial increase will be financed largely through higher taxes on businesses and workers, coupled with a sharp rise in public debt.
