Millions of struggling families across the UK could soon receive a much-needed £200 boost to help with soaring energy bills this winter. The new cost of living payment forms part of government measures to ease financial pressures on vulnerable households.
Who qualifies for the £200 payment?
The payment will be automatically awarded to households receiving certain benefits, including:
- Universal Credit
- Pension Credit
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
When will payments arrive?
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed payments will be made between October 2024 and March 2025, with exact dates to be announced closer to the time.
How will the money be paid?
Eligible recipients don't need to apply - the payment will be made automatically to the bank account where you normally receive your benefits. The £200 will appear as a separate transaction with the reference "DWP COL".
Additional winter support
This payment comes alongside other government support measures including:
- The Warm Home Discount (£150 off electricity bills)
- Winter Fuel Payment (up to £300 for pensioners)
- Cold Weather Payments (£25 during very cold periods)
Energy experts warn that despite this support, many families will still face difficult choices this winter as prices remain significantly higher than pre-crisis levels.
