Wetherspoons Cheesy Chips Disaster: Cold Cheese and Chips Leave Pals Stunned
Wetherspoons Cheesy Chips Disaster: Cold Cheese and Chips

Two friends were left in disbelief after ordering a portion of cheesy chips at a Wetherspoons pub in Nottingham, only to be served a plate of cold chips with two slices of American cheese on a separate dish. Joe Bull and his 24-year-old friend Johnny visited The Woodthorpe Top JD Wetherspoon Mapperley on June 29 and placed the order through the Wetherspoons app for £4.50.

Expecting hot chips smothered in melted cheese, the pair instead received a "deconstructed" version: a bowl of cold chips accompanied by a blue and white plate holding two slices of cold cheese. The duo burst into laughter, with Johnny exclaiming, "Are you f**kin' having me on?" as he slapped the cheese slices onto the chips.

Social Media Reaction and Viral Video

Johnny found the mishap so amusing that he posted a video of the order on social media, where it quickly went viral. The clip racked up over 184,000 views and 13,000 likes on TikTok, with users branding the dish "criminal" and "diabolical." One commenter wrote, "That's criminal," while another said, "Nah, imagine paying five quid for DIY cheesy chips." A third joked, "Deconstructed cheesy chips for artistic flair."

However, some viewers defended Wetherspoons, suggesting the friends had selected the wrong menu items. One user replied, "You've ordered a side of chips and a side of American burger cheese to try to save 20p." Another added, "You've ordered chips and American cheese slices separately and then moaned about it."

Pub's Explanation and Customer's Response

Joe and Johnny complained to a staff member, who explained that on the Wetherspoons app, customers can choose between American cheese or another type. According to the employee, selecting American cheese means the chef does not melt it over the chips but serves it separately. Joe recounted, "The woman tried to claim that on the Wetherspoons App you can either choose American cheese or another cheese. If you pick American cheese they don't put it on there apparently. So, she said it was our choice [of cheese] that made the chef put it on a separate plate."

Despite the incident, Joe said he will continue visiting Wetherspoons, citing its affordability. He stated, "I would never order cheesy chips myself but nothing would put me off going to Wetherspoons in this day and age. With the prices with everything in the world, even if they do make a little f*ck up with one of your orders, Wetherspoons is always going to be a cheap, fun place." Wetherspoons declined to comment on the matter.
