The Gilded Age Season 4: 'Masterpiece' Period Drama Returning Soon
The Gilded Age Season 4 Returning This Autumn

HBO's acclaimed period drama The Gilded Age has officially resumed production, with Season 4 set to premiere later this year. The series, created by Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, is set in late 19th-century New York City and is widely regarded as a worthy successor to the beloved ITV show.

Fan Favorite Returns

Many fans argue that The Gilded Age surpasses Downton Abbey in quality, thanks to its compelling storylines, lavish production design, and stellar ensemble cast featuring Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski. Set in the 1880s, the series focuses on the simmering conflict between two dynasties: the established van Rhijn family and the newly wealthy Russells.

Carrie Coon stars as Bertha Russell, whose husband George (Morgan Spector) earned his fortune as a robber baron and is determined to climb Manhattan's social ladder. Meanwhile, formidable widow Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) maintains a fierce rivalry with Bertha, refusing to associate with anyone whose wealth postdates the Declaration of Independence.

Production Update

This week, HBO Max announced that Season 4 is currently filming, with new episodes due in autumn. Since the streaming platform has also launched in the UK this year, audiences can expect simultaneous release with the US, and the show will also be available via Sky and NOW.

Teaser footage offers a glimpse behind the scenes as the main cast reunites on set. Christine Baranski teases, "I'm actually more excited about this season than I've been of any of the seasons." Other cast members hint at an "expanding world" and "even higher stakes," with Coon noting Bertha is in a "very precarious position."

Fan Excitement

The first-look video has sparked tremendous excitement among fans. One viewer declared, "I need a hundred seasons of this!" Another confessed to rewatching the series multiple times. A third enthused, "FULL.BODY.CHILLS," and another wrote, "OMG I'm counting the days til Fall even more now!!!! I LOVE this show!!!!"

An IMDb reviewer gushed, "Absolute masterpiece! I absolutely love this series! The majesty and mastery of the intricate goings on at the time are eloquently portrayed. BRAVO!!"

Period drama enthusiasts who haven't yet watched The Gilded Age are encouraged to catch up before Season 4 arrives. One Facebook fan community member boldly claimed, "The Gilded Age is even better than Downton Abbey." Another agreed, "While I love both series, I agree. The Gilded Age seems fresher to me."

The Gilded Age Season 4 premieres this autumn on HBO Max, Sky, and NOW.
