Expert says Meghan Markle cosplayed as chef on MasterChef
Meghan Markle cosplayed as chef, expert says

Meghan Markle's appearance on MasterChef Australia has been scrutinized by a body language expert who claims she adopted an 'authoritarian' persona and appeared to be 'cosplaying' as a chef.

Expert analysis of Meghan's gestures

Renowned body language expert Judi James spoke to the Daily Express US about the Duchess of Sussex's mannerisms during the episode, which aired on July 22. The episode was recorded during Meghan's Australian visit in April.

James noted that as Meghan entered the studio, 'her brows are raised, and her eye expression registers excitement. Her poise, though, is pure 'Duchess' to remind everyone of her status.' She added that Meghan's plain black shirt and skirt 'are one apron away from looking like the full chef's get-up, and there are some rather authoritarian-style gestures to give the look of someone used to being in charge in a kitchen.'

Cosplaying as a chef

James further suggested Meghan was 'cosplaying' as a member of the culinary world. 'There's the chef cosplay look because she apparently has to line up with the other judges, projecting a level of expertise as she puts the competitors through their paces,' the expert said.

During the episode, contestants were challenged to prepare a dish 'fit for a duchess,' showcasing a seasonal ingredient with a personal, nostalgic narrative. Meghan selected Australian honey, macadamia nuts, celeriac, citrus fruits, and edible flowers — ingredients she often uses in her own cooking shows.

Two personas on display

James observed that appearing on MasterChef may have been a 'tough call' for the mother of two, as she presented two distinct personas. 'There's her duchess image with the air of elegance and specialness, but there's also apparently a 'not a royal' request that means she needs to veer onto the side of 'being herself' rather than making the slot look too much like a royal visit,' James concluded.

Meghan shared personal anecdotes, mentioning that her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, enjoy Brussels sprouts at home — a revelation that prompted judge Poh Ling Yeow to say 'that's impressive.' Meghan also discussed her own cooking style, favoring grilled meats, fish, citrus, and casual preparation, and encouraged contestants to 'remember to have fun, to keep a sense of humor about it and to cook from the heart.'
