Lidl Crowned UK's Best Supermarket Bakery by YouTuber

A YouTuber has crowned Lidl as the UK's best supermarket bakery after conducting a blind taste test of items from five major retailers. The content creator, known as Ksans, sampled crusty rolls, pizza slices, sausage rolls, jam doughnuts, and mystery items from Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, and Lidl.

The Crusty Roll Round

The first test focused on crusty rolls. Sainsbury's scored 7 out of 10, while Lidl's roll was deemed "too soft" at 6.5. Tesco's roll came fourth with a 6, and Morrisons' "nice and crunchy" roll received 5.5. Waitrose topped the category with an 8, praised for its "nice level of crunch on the outside" and soft interior.

Savoury Items Tested

For pizza slices, Lidl and Waitrose both scored 7.5, with Lidl impressing on base, cheese, and toppings, while Waitrose had "super soft" dough. Sainsbury's pizza was described as "disappointing" and "hard," scoring 5.5.

In the sausage roll test, Morrisons' version was "too minty" but scored 6.5. Tesco's sausage roll earned an 8 for its pastry and flavour, putting Tesco in the lead, while Sainsbury's ranked last.

Sweet Treats and Doughnuts

Jam doughnuts saw Morrisons score just 2 out of 10, with its doughnut called "hard" and jam compared to tomato ketchup. Sainsbury's took first place with 7.7, followed by Tesco, Lidl, and Waitrose.

For the final mystery item round, Morrisons' sprinkle iced finger bun, Lidl's Dubai chocolate muffin, Waitrose's cherry and almond Bakewell, Tesco's cinnamon twist, and Sainsbury's apple and cinnamon baton were ranked. Tesco came fifth with 2 points, Sainsbury's fourth with 4, Morrisons third with 5.5, Waitrose second with 7.8, and Lidl first with 8 points.

Overall Winner

After tallying scores, Ksans named Lidl as his favourite supermarket bakery overall, citing the food quality, variety, and in-store layout. Waitrose placed second in the overall ranking.
