A New Zealander living in the UK has shared an honest review of her first British KFC experience, finishing her meal with one burning question: why don't they salt the chips?
A Tough Adjustment
Reach's Vita Molyneux has been living in the UK for two years but had never tried British KFC. Back in New Zealand, KFC was a beloved lunchtime treat, but whispers from fellow Kiwi friends suggested British KFC wasn't worth the bother—mainly because Brits don't season their chips. Determined to find out for herself, Vita ordered a KFC lunch.
The Order
In the spirit of fairness, Vita ordered as close to her usual New Zealand order as possible: a popcorn chicken snack box, potato and gravy, and a snack burger with cheese. However, she quickly discovered differences. In the UK, potatoes and gravy must be ordered separately, and the snack burger is called a mini fillet burger with no option to add cheese via the delivery app.
The Verdict
The food arrived in under 20 minutes, steaming hot. Vita dived into the chips first. To her dismay, the rumours were true—there was no seasoning. "The chips were a little limp, but hot enough, but I could not get past the lack of salt," she said. "Where I'm from, KFC chips are laden with chicken-flavoured salt."
After adding her own salt, the chips became passable. The mini fillet burger was small but tasty, with the right amount of mayonnaise. The mash and gravy, when combined, were delicious, with the potato tasting more authentic than in New Zealand. The highlight was the popcorn chicken—"absolutely perfect, light, airy, flavourful and crispy."
The Big Question
Overall, Vita's first British KFC was better than expected, but the lack of salt on chips was a real disappointment. She finished her meal wondering: "Why don't KFC salt their chips in the UK?" Despite this, she said it won't put her off ordering again—as long as she has salt at home.
