Gervais' Alley Cats branded 'filth' by BBC star

Ricky Gervais' new animated Netflix series Alley Cats has been dealt a blunt review by Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt, who told viewers the show is "filth" and "not family viewing".

The comedy, written by and starring Gervais, launches on August 7 and is firmly aimed at adults, packed with foul language, crude humour and outrageous characters.

Saturday Kitchen verdict

On the August 1 edition of the BBC programme, Tebbutt and guest Kerry Godliman watched a brief preview of the series. Tebbutt said: "That is the only clip we can show, because it's filth!"

He then joked that families expecting a children's cartoon might be in for a surprise: "Yeah, it's not family viewing. Unless you have teenagers."

Godliman, who previously starred with Gervais in Derek and After Life, has reunited with him for Alley Cats, voicing one of the characters.

Three cats, one sofa

The animated series follows three stray cats living in a derelict house, passing the time on a sofa and delivering brutally honest observations on the world while watching television.

Gervais provides the voice of Gus, a cynical ginger tom. David Earl plays Puke, an eccentric and foul-mouthed stray, and Tom Basden voices Ponce, a pedigree cat who acts as the sensible voice of the trio.

Of the voice cast, Gervais said: "I cast my usual gang of comedy chums, because I know exactly what they're capable of. They can stay in character, drive the plot, stick to the screenplay, and go completely off-piste whenever the moment demands it."

Not for the easily offended

Ahead of the premiere, Gervais acknowledged that the comedy is likely to divide opinion. He warned viewers not to take the outrageous characters too seriously and pleaded with audiences not to be "offended".

Saturday Kitchen airs on BBC One on Saturdays from 10am.
