Coronation Street viewers are speculating that a beloved character could make a ghostly return to Weatherfield, almost three decades after her death. Alma Baldwin, played by Amanda Barrie, originally appeared on the cobbles in 1981 and became a regular from 1988 until her character's death in 2001.
Alma's History on the Cobbles
Alma, a supermarket worker, wed Mike Baldwin and later ran the café with Gail Platt. She also shared an enduring friendship with Gail's mother, Audrey Roberts. In 1997, she survived a harrowing incident when her former lover Don Brennan forced her into a taxi and plunged it into a canal; she escaped by swimming to safety. Alma briefly dated Ken Barlow in 1991 after her split from Mike. She died in 2001 after being diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer, passing away at Audrey's home surrounded by Mike, Ken, and Audrey.
Fan Speculation About a Ghostly Return
On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, viewers have discussed the possibility of Alma returning as a ghost. One fan wrote, 'Could Alma be brought back as a ghost? I believe the actress is alive 90 odd? Could be a storyline with Roy or Audrey having dreams about Alma in the cafe.' Another added, 'I'd love this,' while a third commented, 'It would make more sense than some current storylines tbh.'
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
