Summer holidays often prompt families to seek affordable entertainment, and a trip to the cinema can be a popular option. However, the combined cost of tickets and concession stand purchases can quickly escalate. For years, moviegoers have resorted to sneaking in supermarket snacks, but many major UK cinema chains actually permit outside food and drink, subject to specific restrictions.
Money Saving Expert, founded by Martin Lewis, confirmed that most chains allow cold snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, while banning hot food, strong-smelling items, and alcohol. The advice notes that while the aroma of popcorn may tempt, bringing your own snacks can save money, and the practice is widely permitted.
Chain-by-Chain Breakdown
Vue, operating over 900 screens across 94 locations, has a relaxed policy. Their guest policy states: "Feel free to bring your own food and drink with you, but leave the hot food and alcohol at home."
ODEON welcomes outside treats at almost all of its 102 venues, with a request to respect other guests. Banned items include heated food, pungent or strong-smelling food, and alcoholic drinks. However, the ODEON Islington Luxe & Dine does not allow outside food.
Cineworld, with 87 venues, follows the industry standard, allowing most cold snacks and soft drinks. The chain enforces a strict no externally purchased hot food or alcohol policy, reserving the right to refuse entry with such items.
Showcase permits outside items at all 16 locations, with three specific bans: hot food, alcoholic beverages, and drinks in glass containers. They reserve the right to refuse admission.
Everyman, operating 49 venues, takes a different approach. Operating as a restaurant-cinema hybrid, it maintains a firm policy: "Only food and drinks purchased at the cinema are allowed into our screens." This means a complete ban on outside snacks.
Practical Advice
In summary, for most major chains, as long as snacks are cold, non-alcoholic, and not strongly odorous, they are likely permitted. Exceptions include Everyman, where outside food is entirely prohibited. Moviegoers are advised to check individual venue policies, especially for locations like ODEON Islington Luxe & Dine.
