Director Peter Berg has provided a major update on the upcoming Call of Duty film, confirming that the adaptation will be set in the Modern Warfare universe and will feature iconic characters from the franchise. The movie, a collaboration between game developer Activision and Paramount, is scheduled for release on June 30, 2028.
Setting and Characters Confirmed
Speaking at a panel during Fanatics Fest in New York on July 18, 2026, Berg revealed that the film will take place within the Modern Warfare timeline. He hinted that Task Force 141, the elite squad central to the games, will appear, name-dropping heroes Captain Price, Soap, Gaz, Alex, and Ghost. Berg also teased the inclusion of supporting characters like Laswell and Shepherd, alongside a potential new villain.
“You might see a little Laswell, you might see a little Shepherd, and I think a whole lot of new surprises. Maybe a new Makarov. Maybe somebody a little meaner than Makarov,” Berg said during the panel.
Director and Co-Writer Details
Berg, known for directing action films such as Hancock and Deepwater Horizon, is co-writing the screenplay with Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of the television series Yellowstone and Landman. The film was first announced in 2025, with Paramount CEO David Ellison pledging “a cinematic experience that honors the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand.”
In a video posted to X by independent tech and gaming journalist Kareem Soued, Berg expressed his enthusiasm: “We're so excited, you know, the enthusiasm that these guys have for the game, and I know you do, Sheridan and I both have. We have so much respect for the incredible work, the stories, as a filmmaker, the stories that these guys have created are so good. The characters are so good. And we are thrilled to be part of the team.”
