Frustrated BBC viewers took to social media to complain about the broadcaster's new Welsh drama, The Rapture, minutes into the first episode. The five-part psychological thriller is adapted from Liz Jensen's bestselling 2009 novel about a teenager accused of killing her mother, who claims she has the ability to predict disasters.
It follows child psychologist Dr Gabrielle 'Gabs' Fox, who is working with the troubled teen as she uncovers her unique ability to predict the future. Meanwhile, the doctor is recovering from the trauma of a car accident that killed her husband, Alex, and left her paralysed. The show is described as a high-stakes drama that crackles with wit and danger, while also exploring themes such as climate change, corruption, spiritual yearning, and the deep bonds we form in times of crisis.
Viewers unimpressed with debut
However, many viewers were less than impressed with the first episode and flocked to social media to share their disappointment. One user penned: "The Rapture is painful", as another agreed: "Gave The Rapture a generous 12 minutes, but the fragrance of clever-clogs twaddle coming off it was pure eau de ick."
A third echoed: "Already bored with this. Yes, she will be innocent, and the religious dad will be guilty." Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: "It's a bit slow," before switching off 20 minutes later, following up with: "Well, I did try."
