Millions of pensioners across the UK are set to receive the Winter Fuel Payment, but some people will not qualify for the financial support.
The payment, which is between £100 and £300, is designed to help with heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027. According to the government, if you were born on or before 27 June 1960, you could get between £100 and £300. Most eligible claimants receive the payment automatically.
Who is excluded from the payment
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) states that you will not get the financial boost if you usually live outside of England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. You also won't be eligible if you were visiting these countries during the 'qualifying week' of 21 to 27 September 2026, but usually live elsewhere.
People who were in hospital receiving free treatment for the whole of that week and the year before are also not eligible. Additionally, you will not qualify if you need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave says you cannot claim public funds, or if you were in prison for the whole of the qualifying week.
Care home residents and means-tested benefits
People living in a care home are generally eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. However, you will not be eligible if you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and you lived in a care home for the whole time from 29 June 2026 or earlier.
The amount you get is based on your date of birth and your circumstances between 21 and 27 September 2026, known as the qualifying week. Around nine million pensioners are expected to receive the payment.
