Van drivers could face annual fuel bills of up to £1,965 as diesel pump prices reach a new record high, according to analysts from comparison site MoneySuperMarket.
Motorists are already paying an average of 199.18p per litre, up from the previous record of 199.09p. However, diesel prices vary across the country, with some forecourts charging up to £2.38 a litre.
Van drivers hit hardest
With an estimated 4.5 million van drivers in the UK, those who travel an average of 8,107 miles a year would face an annual bill close to £1,965. Alicia Hempsted, van insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said rising fuel costs can have a massive impact on business, affecting profitability.
“Van drivers are currently dealing with a combination of rising fuel prices and increased mileage, both of which are pushing up overall running costs,” she said. “For many tradespeople and small business owners, this has a direct impact on profitability, making it more important than ever to manage expenses carefully.”
Mileage on the rise
Those with vans are likely to travel more miles for work too, facing a double whammy. Average mileage for van drivers is increasing, rising from 6,964 miles in 2022 to 8,018 in 2025 – and this has already increased again to 8,107 miles.
MoneySuperMarket experts advise drivers to consider a fuel cost calculator to keep an eye on rising bills. They can also check where the cheapest and nearest petrol stations are by using data provided by the Government’s FuelFinder scheme.
Alicia said: “Using tools such as the fuel cost calculator can help drivers better understand how changes in pump prices affect spending on fuel. Even small price differences between local petrol stations can add up over time, so comparing fuel prices before filling up is a simple but effective way to reduce costs.”
