Top lip balms for dry, chapped lips: expert advice and tried-and-tested picks

From everyday salves with SPF to intensive formulas and skincare-make-up hybrids, the best lip balms can be a godsend for dry lips. But how do they work? Dr Jason Thomson, head of medical at Skin + Me, explains that lip balms hydrate and protect by forming a barrier with oils and waxes that lock in moisture. This is particularly helpful because the skin on our lips is thinner and lacks oil glands, making it more prone to dryness and chapping, especially in winter.

In addition to hydration, lip balms can provide nourishing and soothing benefits, and defend against environmental damage. Thomson highlights the importance of sun protection, recommending a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30, applied every two hours. For treating dry, chapped lips, he advises reapplying whenever lips feel dry, typically at least four times a day.

We tested a range of balms over two months, assessing immediate and long-term hydration, comfort, and extra benefits like plumping effects, SPF, and tint. Hello Sunday’s formula impressed with broad-spectrum SPF 50, hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and squalene. It provided instant moisture and lasting hydration, with a clear, gel-like consistency that left a juicy sheen. Though waxy and thick, it is vegan and unscented.

Bondi Sands’ lip balm with SPF 50 also delivered, using vitamin E and coconut oil to keep lips supple. It has a thick, buttery texture that melts into a lightweight layer, with a divine toasted coconut scent. It is reef-friendly, cruelty-free, and vegan. For intensive care, a lavender honey balm with shea butter soothed and softened chapped lips, with a rich, buttery consistency and sweet honey-citrus scent.

Another standout is a do-it-all balm with SPF 50 and a high-gloss finish in six sheer shades. It uses shea butter and cacao seed butter for lasting hydration, with a soft peppermint scent and slight cooling sensation. Despite a subtle bitter taste, it left lips markedly soft and supple.
