Toilet cleaning hack: dust first for sparkling results
Toilet cleaning hack: dust first for sparkling results

A cleaning enthusiast has shared a toilet cleaning tip that many people overlook: dusting the area before deep cleaning. The advice is that tackling dry debris first makes the job easier and prevents moving around gross dust without actually cleaning properly.

Why dusting comes first

The logic behind the tip is that dry debris – hair, lint, dried splashes, toilet-roll fluff and general bathroom dust – can turn into a grimy paste once it gets wet. Disinfectants also work best on surfaces that are already physically clean, so removing dust and loose dirt first means the product can actually contact the surface and do its job.

The social media user advised: "A duster you can toss or wash afterwards is best."

Steps for a thorough clean

The enthusiast recommended spraying and wiping all exteriors, including the flushing handle and all the nooks and crannies of the toilet. She said: "Grab some paper towels and wipe the top and underside of the seats."

She continued: "Fill the inside of the bowl with toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing, making sure to get under the lip of the toilet." Finally, she advised flushing and rinsing the toilet bowl scrubber in fresh water, and spraying to disinfect if needed.

Viewer reactions and extra tips

She also offered a tip regarding the brush: "Let the brush dry fully between the seats before putting it away to avoid mould and bacteria growth in the brush holder." In the comments, people expressed gratitude for her advice, with some revealing they clean their toilets this way every day. One said: "Love all your cleaning tips." Another wrote: "I use Q-tips to get into the crevices instead of removing the toilet seat." Someone else remarked: "Yes!! I use my swiffer to clean off the dust on the toilet first too!" However, another viewer suggested this wasn't a deep clean, stating: "For me, this is not deep cleaning. We clean out toilets with soap and water and make sure to brush it thoroughly."
