While certain products fly off the shelves due to their sheer popularity, those opting for home delivery may find their chosen items swapped out for something altogether different. That's precisely what happened to one Tesco shopper, who was left gobsmacked when she discovered her three bags of Cadbury Snowball treats had been replaced with something she certainly wasn't expecting.
Unexpected substitute saves £121.50
Her daughter Tilda took to TikTok to capture the family's priceless reaction as they unpacked their Tesco delivery, only to discover they'd been sent thirty boxes of Tunnock's tea cakes instead.
"My mum was just trying to buy Christmas chocolates in advance and instead got 30 boxes of Tunnock's tea cakes, Tesco what happened?" she wrote in the overlay text of the video.
The saga began when Tilda shared a screenshot confirming that her mum's three bags of Cadbury Snowballs had been swapped for 30 boxes of Tunnock's Milk Chocolate tea cakes, priced at £4.50 per box. However, thanks to Tesco's substitution policy, her mum only paid the equivalent cost of three bags of Cadbury Snowballs at £4.50 each, meaning she saved herself £121.50.

The footage went on to show the family gathering round as the Tesco delivery arrived, with the distinctive yellow boxes of tea cakes rapidly mounting up across the kitchen worktop. In the post's caption, Tilda also disclosed her mum had generously handed two boxes of the tea cakes to the delivery driver, keeping the remaining 28 boxes for herself.
Viewers were equally baffled by the mix-up, with one commenting: "I'd take the tea cakes... 30 boxes as a substitute is a bargain!" Responding to the video, a Tesco spokesperson said: "We work hard to deliver a great shopping experience for all of our Click + Collect and Grocery Home Shopping delivery customers, with the vast majority of our online orders fulfilled exactly as ordered."
"We've fixed the temporary technical glitch that resulted in too many boxes of teacakes being delivered to this customer, and we're sorry for the inconvenience caused. The good news is there'll be no shortage of teacakes in their household for a while."
