A Tesco customer who ordered three bags of Cadbury Christmas chocolates in her grocery delivery was left stunned when the supermarket substituted them with 30 boxes of Tunnock's tea cakes.
The shopper's daughter, Tilda, shared the moment on TikTok as the family unpacked the home-delivered Tesco order and discovered the unexpected replacement. In the video's overlay text, Tilda wrote: "My mum was just trying to buy Christmas chocolates in advance and instead got 30 boxes of Tunnock's tea cakes, Tesco what happened?"
Substitution saved the shopper £121.50
A screenshot in the video confirmed that the three bags of Cadbury Snowballs had been swapped for 30 boxes of Tunnock's Milk Chocolate tea cakes, each worth £4.50. Under Tesco's substitution rules, the mother paid the equivalent of the three Cadbury Snowball bags at £4.50 each, meaning she saved £121.50 in total.
The video showed the family gathering to unpack the order as the yellow boxes of tea cakes piled up on the kitchen counter. In the caption, Tilda revealed her mother had given two boxes to the delivery driver and kept the remaining 28.
Viewers react to the mix-up
Viewers were as baffled as the family, with one commenting: "I'd take the tea cakes… 30 boxes as a substitute is a bargain!" Another said: "This is like buying a raffle ticket and winning the EuroMillions instead!" A third wrote: "What happened? You f**king won at life, that's what happened."
Tesco apologises for the error
A Tesco spokesperson said: "We work hard to deliver a great shopping experience for all of our Click + Collect and Grocery Home Shopping delivery customers, with the vast majority of our online orders fulfilled exactly as ordered.
"We've fixed the temporary technical glitch that resulted in too many boxes of teacakes being delivered to this customer, and we're sorry for the inconvenience caused. The good news is there'll be no shortage of teacakes in their household for a while."
