Tesco is offering motorists a discount of 8p per litre on petrol and diesel through a new coupon scheme. The supermarket chain is distributing vouchers to customers who spend more than £60 in-store. The coupons will be issued until August 31, and the discount must be claimed before the first week of September.
How the discount works
Money Saving Expert (MSE) explained: “If you spend £60+ in-store at Tesco by Monday 31 August, you'll get a coupon with your receipt for 8p off per litre of petrol or diesel at a Tesco filling station.
“You’ll have until Sunday 6 September to redeem your fuel coupon by scanning it at the petrol station till. This means you need to pay for your fuel in person, so it can’t be used at pay-at-pump services. The maximum discount is £10, but as the average person fills up 35 to 45 litres of fuel, you'll likely save about £2.80 to £3.60.”
Eligibility and restrictions
Tesco has confirmed that the minimum spend will exclude purchases made online and via Whoosh. Money spent at Tesco café, tobacco kiosk, opticians, phone store, concessions, Travel Money, and Tesco Bank will also not count towards the threshold.
Purchases of lottery products, e-top up, savings stamps, postage stamps, carrier bags, prescription medicines, and infant milk formulae will also not work towards the spend.
Tesco has stressed that coupons must be presented in paper form at the kiosk and cannot be used via Pay at Pump or at unmanned petrol station sites.
Alternative fuel prices
Despite the savings, motorists should use the Government’s FuelFinder scheme to check the cheapest petrol stations in their area. Data shows that Tesco is not currently the cheapest supermarket to fill up a tank of petrol or diesel fuel.
Data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that Asda has the most affordable petrol prices in the UK, with motorists paying an average of 158.6p per litre, lower than Tesco’s 158.7p per litre. For diesel, Tesco was pushed into third place, with Sainsbury’s 178.8p per litre the cheapest, followed by Asda’s 178.9p and Tesco’s 179.1p.
