Tesco has announced a major update affecting 332 of its stores, reintroducing its Kids Eat Free initiative starting from Monday. The scheme, confirmed today (Friday, May 22), will run throughout the May half term, though weekends are excluded.
How the Scheme Works
Britain's largest supermarket chain will offer one complimentary Kids Hot Meal Deal, Kids Breakfast, or Kids Pick 'n' Mix deal with every adult menu purchase when shoppers scan their Tesco Clubcard. The promotion applies to multiple meals, meaning families with several children can benefit. For example, an adult ordering a toastie, a piece of fruit, and a coffee can claim up to three free kids' meals.
Support for Families
Claire De Silva, head of communities at Tesco, expressed hope that the initiative would provide relief to hard-pressed parents during the school holidays. "We know that household budgets can be really stretched over school holidays, so offering free meals to children during this time is just one of the ways we can support families," she said. "Kids Eat Free is just one of the many ways that Tesco is helping families spend less this half-term. We're committed to delivering great value to all Tesco customers through Aldi Price Match, Clubcard Prices and Everyday Low Prices."
Government Measures
The move follows Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiling measures on Thursday (May 21) to make holidays more affordable for parents. Family tickets at attractions such as theme parks, zoos, and museums will become cheaper due to a VAT reduction. The cut also applies to children's admission at cinemas, soft play centres, and theatres, as well as children's meals at restaurants and cafés. Additionally, under-16s in England will enjoy free bus travel in August, and import duties on certain staple foods will be reduced as part of a 'Great British Summer Savings' campaign.
Children's Menu Options
Tesco's children's menu includes breakfast choices like Egg and Soldiers, Beans and Soldiers, and Pancakes. Hot main courses feature Omega 3 Fish Fingers, Baked Chicken Strips, and Pork Sausages. The Kids Pick 'n' Mix offers a sandwich, a drink, two snacks, and a piece of fresh fruit, providing plenty of options to keep children fed from breakfast through dinner.
