Supermarket orange juice taste test: £4 M&S wins over rivals

Marks and Spencer's freshly squeezed orange juice, priced at £4 for a 1 litre bottle, has been rated the best in a comparative taste test of five supermarket brands, scoring a perfect 10/10. Lidl's Naturis Orange Juice finished bottom of the ranking with a score of 3/10.

Orange juice is the most popular and best-selling juice across the globe, and because of that, it can be found on offer anywhere and everywhere. Given how widespread it is, the question arises of whether there is an actual difference among the kinds of orange juice available, especially for those who make it a staple in their weekly shops.

Lidl and Asda rank lowest

Lidl's take on orange juice isn't bad, but it's not for everyone. The bottle states it is 100% not from concentrate, but the juice tasted a bit watered down compared to other options. Even when pouring it, the consistency seemed much thinner than the others. After tasting it, one sip was enough; it was clear that having more would be a bit sickly. It would not be bought again.

Asda Smooth Orange Juice, priced at £1.80, was described as nostalgic, tasting like the little cartons of juice you'd have in your packed lunch. It was much cheaper than a few of the other options, but would be bought solely because it is cheaper. It scored 4/10.

Tesco offers best value

Tesco's 1 litre juice, made from 15 squeezed “juicy oranges” according to the bottle, scored 7/10. The smell of the orange was genuinely overpowering, and it was liked from consistency to taste. It wasn't too sweet, tasted fresh, and was all around enjoyable, though it did not taste as fresh as the Marks and Spencer option, which used fewer oranges for the same amount of juice, or the Sainsbury's one. At £2, it was considered the best priced for what you are getting.

Sainsbury's and M&S lead the ranking

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice scored 9/10. It genuinely tastes as if you've bitten into an orange slice, and it is refreshing and sweet but not overly sweet. The only reservation was the price, as £3.40 for a 1 litre bottle seems on the pricey side, especially if it's something you would buy regularly. A Nectar card brought the price down to £2.90.

Marks and Spencer's Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice, made from 12 oranges per 1 litre bottle, was rated 10/10. The smell of oranges was noticeable as soon as the bottle was picked up, and nothing could deny that this orange juice had been made from freshly squeezed fruit. While it was smooth orange juice, the tiniest bits of orange segments were visible at the bottom of the glass, which was almost like extra confirmation that it was fresh. The only drawback is that £4 for a bottle is definitely on the more expensive side, and if it's something always wanted stocked in the fridge, it would add up. However, it would be bought again, turning a blind eye to the price.
